Some of Famous MUNs

Here is the oldest MUN in history, National Model United Nations. Founded as a simulation of the League of Nations; adopted current form in 1946 after the founding of the United Nations. Opening Ceremony and Closing Session take place in the United Nations Headquarter. While traditionally it is held in New York, three conferences took place out of United States: 2008 in Xi'an, China, 2010 in Quito, Ecuador and 2010 at Palacky University in Olomouc, the Czech Republic.*

Founded in 1955, only a decade after the creation of the United Nations,

Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) is the largest, oldest, and most prestigious conference of its kind. Staffed entirely by Harvard College undergraduates,HNMUN brings over 3,000 students and faculty together from colleges and universities around the world to simulate the activities of the United Nations. HNMUN offers a unique opportunity to experiencethe challenges of international negotiation and diplomacy.*

The history of TEIMUN started in 1987, when a group of American students who were on an exchange programme in The Netherlands organized the first TEIMUN conference. These founders of TEIMUN were members of the United Nations Association in the USA (UNA-USA). UNA-USA’s main objective is to teach people about the United Nations. The Association tries to accomplish this goal through a number of educational efforts like conferences and workshops. The most famous of these was and still is the Model United Nations conference.*

LIMUN is a registered independent charity which aims to extend cultural empathy, understanding of international affairs, and knowledge of the United Nations amongst young people through the organisation of an annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference. LIMUN is the largest annual university-based Model United Nations conference in Europe. It has a reputation for an exceptional standard of debate, set in London's unique and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Each year, we welcome more than 800 delegates from across the world to London to debate some of the most pressing problems on the global agenda. *

AIMUN 2010 aims to embrace a global perspective with an Asian insight. We have established committees and come up with topics related to Asia, with the aim of having delegates use their different cultural backgrounds to focus on the most pertinent Asian affairs. The General Assembly (third committee) and Security Council would discuss the pertinent political issues while UNEP (Asian division) would set its sights on the most urgent social issues; ESCAP and ASEAN Ministerial Summit places emphasis on regional economic integration and co-operation; the Asian Development Bank Committee looks into the evaluation of loan proposals and the revision of inner institutions while nations compete for the nomination of new world heritage sites in UNESCO-World Heritage Committee. Moreover, the special committees (UNESCO, UNICEF, Ambassador Program, Asian Development Bank and NGO program) of AIMUN are one of a kind in China, promising all participants a most unique experience. These committees are kept small (12-30 delegates) to provide exciting challenges for more experienced 4 delegates.*

Founded in 1995, AMUNC was created as a forum for Australian students to meaningfully engage with important global issues in the spirit of collaboration espoused by the United Nations. While early years of the conference had seen delegates travelling to universities in Sydney and Melbourne, by 2000 the Australian Model United Nations Conference had taken on a truly international dimension, with an increasing contingent of delegates hailing from outside Australia.
Thus in 2003, AMUNC was renamed the ‘Asia-Pacific’ Model United Nations Conference to reflect the growing diversity of its delegates – a trend which has increased exponentially. In 2010 AMUNC welcomed over 600 paticipants from 38 different countries, and 28 unique nationalities hailing from every continent of the globe. AMUNC continues to be the premier Model United Nations conference in the Asia-Pacific region - a status reflected by its continuing patronage by high-profile speakers and official endorsement from those among the highest ranks of government and global leadership.*

Set in several of Oxford's most beautiful colleges and the world-renowned Oxford Union, the Oxford International Model United Nations Conference offers delegates a unique opportunity to debate in the historic surroundings and rich cultural environment of one of Europe's oldest universities.*

WorldMUN was founded in 1991 by several Harvard students who were looking to create a different Model United Nations experience.  It was only natural that the conference's first session would be in Miedzyzdroje, Poland, a city that had just had its borders opened with the fall of the Iron Curtain.  There were about 100 delegates at the 1992 conference.  The conference grew for several years, and, in 1997, WorldMUN partnered with its first host team, the Budapest University of Economic Sciences.  With the introduction of the host team, the conference began to develop its social activities to expand the conference experience beyond committee: Global Village, with delegates bringing food, drink, songs and traditions from their homelands, and Cabaret, a global talent show, began to bookend the conference as much as Opening and Closing Ceremonies did.
From the conference's 10th year on, it began to venture beyond the traditional cities of Europe into Asia Minor, South America, North Africa and the Middle East, East Asia and even North America. As the conference moves into its 20th year, it has grown to represent the most diverse university conference in the world.  WorldMUN was founded in the spirit of idealism and today's conference represents those ideals in a way that promises a unique experience to its almost 2,000 delegates from over 65 countries.*

Model United Nations held by United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI)

Following the inaugural conference in Geneva, Switzerland on 5-7 August 2009, the second annual Global Model United Nations Conference organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 14 - 18 August, 2010. The conference will simulate a General Assembly Summit on intercultural dialogue. The theme of the 2010 conference will be “Towards an Alliance of Civilizations: Bridging Cultures to achieve Peace and Development.”
At the Global Model United Nations Conference, students from every region of the world will role play as foreign diplomats and participate in simulated sessions of the United Nations General Assembly and other multilateral bodies in the UN system. While preparing for Model United Nations conference, students develop leadership skills and research, writing, public speaking and problem solving skills that they will use throughout their lives. In addition, participation also encourages consensus building, conflict resolution and cooperation and the enhancement of leadership skills.

GMUN offers three unique innovations:
  • It uses Rules of Procedure that more closely represent how the United Nations functions; and,
  • It provides unparalleled access to UN officials and diplomats prior to and during the conference.
  • Each delegation representing a Member State is made of students from different countries.

Those are some of famous MUNs, although there are still lots of MUNs in the rest of countries which have its own prestige.
